What I Saw This Week: Summer!

Summer arrived in Vancouver this week, a little late, but very welcome. Suddenly, the air is warm and heavy, the sky is very blue, and bright colour is everywhere: bushes brilliant with roses, markets displaying fresh strawberries and raspberries, and trees rich with the deep green of summer. My small, south-facing garden channels the Mediterranean, and the plants that have been in holding pattern for many weeks are welcoming the sun now. People, too!

What I Saw This Week: Pink Dogwood

3-dogwood

The Pacific dogwood, British Columbia’s official flower, have been in bloom throughout June, with their creamy yellow flowers that blend strangely well into the surrounding leaves. This red-flowering dogwood stand out from its less vivid surroundings, catching the eye from blocks away.
